Risto Rautiainen grew up on a farm in Finland. He has a master’s degree in agriculture from the University of Helsinki and PhD in occupational and environmental health from the University of Iowa. His work experience includes leading the safety and health office of the Finnish Farmers Social Insurance Institution (Mela) and serving as Deputy Director of the Great Plains Center for Agricultural Safety and Health, University of Iowa. He is currently professor at the University of Nebraska Medical center and he directs the Central States Center for Agricultural Safety and Health in Omaha, Nebraska. He was chair of the recent COST Action ‘Safety culture and risk management in agriculture’, and he serves as Consultant for the Natural Resources Institute Finland in the Horizon Europe-funded SafeHabitus project. His long-standing professional goal is to reduce injuries and illnesses in agriculture.
